When Allegheny County was formed in September of 1788, it was comprised of seven townships and Pittsburgh, which was at the time known as a borough. Plum was one of those original townships. It at one point extended into what is now North Versailles Township. Plum was founded on December 18, 1788 and reorganized as a borough in 1956. While it has shrunk over the years, it is still one of the bigger areas in Allegheny County. Plum got its name from Plum Creek. As of the 2010 Census, there were just over 27,000 people, just over 10,000 households and just over 7,000 families living in Plum.

Plum is home to the Oakmont Country Club, which has been ranked as of the five best clubs by Golf Digest. 10 years ago it came in 5th place, as well as 5th for toughest courses too. A portion of the PA Turnpike runs through Plum from mile markers 49 through 55. Notable Plum natives include many athletes. There’s Frank Marchlewski, former NFL player for the Rams, Falcons and Bills. There’s also Pat McAfee, punter for the Colts and former punter and kicker for the WVU Mountaineers. 2011’s Miss Pennsylvania is also from Plum. Plum is relatively spread out when it comes to population size—around 20% for each age group from under 20 through over 65.
