As part of DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh, an annual two-day event that provides unprecedented access to buildings around the city, we are featuring 20 of the many buildings participating.
This is the Allegheny HYP Club.
A Brief History of the Allegheny HYP Club
The Allegheny HYP Club is a private social club located downtown. The club can be found at William Penn Place and was built in 1894. It has been added to the list of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks. The name stands for the Allegheny Harvard-Yale-Princeton Club.
The club is highly selective and members-only. It has since opened its doors to those of all collegiate affiliations. It offers multiple marketing opportunities and long lunches perfect for getting to know fellow members. Members can also host private events.
The club was formally founded on November 7, 1930 and approximately 70 years later, it merged with the Three Rivers Stadium-based Allegheny Club after the Allegheny Club filed for bankruptcy protection. On July 1, 1997 the Allegheny HYP Club ended up absorbing the Pittsburgh Club membership and assets.
On your tour of the building, expect to see cocktail bars made of lush wood engraved with Yale Glee Club songs on it a wall engraved with Yale, Princeton and Harvard alums who signed the Declaration of Independence and a cozy outdoor patio with strings of lights overhead.
