Even More ‘Burgh Celebrities: 5 More People You Didn’t (Or Did?) Know Were from Pittsburgh

We all know Pittsburgh is a talented town. Here are just five of the many stars that hail from our great city.

1. Mercury Morris

from Pittsburgh

Running back and kick returner Mercury Morris was born in Pittsburgh and went to Avonworth High School. He later attended West Texas State University and then played in the American Football League then the AFC after the AFL merged with the NFL. He played in three Super Bowls and won two of them. Later in life, he made a career for himself as a motivational speaker. He was born in 1947 and is 72 years old.

2. Bill Fralic

from Pittsburgh

Bill Fralic was an offensive guard for the Atlanta Falcons and and Detroit Lions. He was born in Penn Hills and played football for Penn Hills High School, graduating in 1981. He spent some time in the World Wrestling Federation and passed away at age 56 in December 2018 from cancer.

3. Randy White

from Pittsburgh

Born in Pittsburgh, defensive tackle Randy White went to high school in Delaware. He later was recruited by the University of Maryland. He played for the Dallas Cowboys as middle linebacker and was later moved to right defensive tackle. On his 25th birthday, he received the honor of co-MVP of Super Bowl XII with his teammate Harvey Martin. White married a model named Vicci Haney in 1978 and the two have a daughter together.

4. LaVar Arrington

from Pittsburgh

Born in Pittsburgh and while attending North Hills Senior High School, Arrington played linebacker and running back. He was inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame on June 24, 2011. He played college football for Penn State’s Nittany Lions and later was drafted to the Washington Redskins. He later spent some time playing for the New York Giants. Arrington was named after LeVar Burton, the actor who played Kunte Kinte in the 1977 miniseries Roots. 

5. Jackie Evancho

from Pittsburgh

The America’s Got Talent phenom was the first runner-up in the fifth season of the show. She was born in Pittsburgh and went to Pine-Richland High School. Evancho’s first major-label release was for Columbia Records called “O Holy Night.” The release made Evancho the top-selling debut artist of that year it was released and the youngest solo artist ever to debut in the top 10—not too shabby!
