Beechview

Beechview, at one time part of Lower St. Clair Township, is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh located on its southwestern side founded over 100 years ago in 1905. It became part of the City of Pittsburgh in 1909. The trolley, now known as the “T”, was extended to the neighborhood in 1902.   Beechview’s economy took a turn for the worse in the late ’90s but has since recovered—things like being convenient to the trolley and new businesses have certainly helped the area.

The Broadway-Beechview Avenue intersection forms what many call the center or “spine” of the neighborhood. Almost all of the retail and religious institutions are along these streets.  Public transportation such as the busway and the “T” rail line offer easy access to either downtown Pittsburgh or the South Hills. The Seldom-Seen Greenway is a popular spot for outdoorsy types, with it being the last bit of not developed land in the city. Notable schools in Beechview include Beechwood Elementary and Brashear High School.

Canton Avenue, the steepest street in the U.S. at a 37% grade, runs through Beechview.   The hills of this neighborhood are crossed by cobblestone streets and lined with homes built mostly in the early 1900’s.  The diversity of the neighborhood has brought people of many cultures to Pittsburgh.
