A Brief History of Manchester
Manchester is a community located on the North Side of Pittsburgh. The neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and includes the Manchester Historic District, which protects over 600 buildings in a 51.6 acre area. It’s also represented on City Council in District 6. The Manchester Historic District is Pittsburgh’s biggest historic district. It’s preserved mainly for its early 19th century Victorian homes. The Three Rivers Heritage Trail System runs right along Manchester.
Facts about Manchester
The neighborhood was rated in the Top 10 on Pittsburgh City Living for being close to everything due to its walkability, access to roads and public transportation. The community is almost completely residential. According to the 2010 Census, there were just over 2,000 people in Manchester. More families (55.7 percent to 46.3 percent) were in non-family homes versus family homes. The median sale price for a home in Manchester is around $170,000 (an increase of 36 percent!). However, the average price per square foot for homes in Manchester was $54, over 40 percent lower than the average price per square foot of homes in the city. Surrounding Pittsburgh neighborhoods include Allegheny West, California-Kirkbride, Central Northside, Marshall-Shadeland and Chateau. Historic homes include Anderson Manor, Victory Baptist Church and Hoene-Werle House.
Manchester was also home to Dorothy Mae Richardson, a well-known African American activist who is recognized for introducing a new approach to developing communities in the late 1960s.
I lived on Sheffield Street back in the 50’s went to St. Joseph School till 1958, then moved to the North end and went to Perry High School
As a child spent much time on Sheffield st with beloved aunts and uncles. Great memories of many years ago
