5 Places to Visit Before You Go Back to School

Go Back to School

It’s almost time to go back to school. Whether you’re headed back to elementary school or grad school, we’ve got five classic Pittsburgh places you’ll need to visit before the leaves change and you start sharpening those pencils again.

1. Grab one last ice cream cone at Page Dairy Mart

Take one last trek to the famed ice cream shop on East Carson Street. Grab their most popular sundae, the Nancy B. Vanilla soft serve (or twist or chocolate depending on your preference) is cold and melty below hot fudge and three halves of warm chocolate chip cookies from Nancy B.’s Bakery in Homestead. Indulge in one before the weather turns into chilly fall. Info here.

2. Take one last ride on the Phantom’s Revenge

Summer is all about thrills. Head to the Phantom’s Revenge at Kennywood for one last ride on the famed coaster. The maximum speed of the ride is 85 mph with a maximum drop of 232 feet—the perfect thing to do before settling back into your fall routine. Info here.

3. Head to Stage AE for one more warm summer night

Stage AE is showing some great shows this summer, including Dashboard Confessional with the All-American Rejects, XFest featuring Bastille and Rancid and the Dropkick Murphys, just to name a few. There’s nothing like experiencing live music outdoors at a venue like Stage AE in the ‘burgh. Info here

4. See the Buccos again

The Pirates are now third in the National League Central. There’s just something magical about seeing them on a warm, late summer’s night. Stop by August 10th for family movie night at PNC Park—they’re showing Boss Baby at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 and discounted food and drinks will be available. Info here.

5. Go for a run outside

Pittsburgh really is fun to run outside in in all seasons but let’s be honest, summer takes the cake as number one. There are so many wonderful running routes in the city and Fitt.co compiled some great ones. Neighborhoods like Oakland and the Strip District are certainly picturesque. You could also see a lot of the city with the Lawrenceville to Point State Park route. Info here.
