This is Real… For Now. Just Don’t Blink.

The Pirates right now are on track to win 97 games!  Trevor Williams is on a 20 game win pace.   Tampa Bay castaway Corey Dickerson is heading toward another All star game.  Oh yeah and over a quarter of the way through the season, they are in first place.

As my esteemed colleague here at Pittsburgh Beautiful mentioned, many questions still remain (See “Are the Pirates for Real?).  I won’t go over the many valid points he made…the Pirates could be dancing through the raindrops and enter a storm the like the one that blasted the South Hills this week.  Yes… that could happen.

However, if anyone outside the North Shore confines of this team saw this coming, they forgot to mention it.  The twin trades of what may be considered one of the most popular players over the last twenty-five years and possibly the best pitcher we’ve had in recent memory made sitting atop the division, especially at this point in the season, seem ridiculous.  Many fans (heck most, and, yeah, especially ME) gave up on the team.

Don’t get me wrong, I still expect a collapse.  And while I forgive Nutting for the trades, I will never forgive him for cutting payroll 15 percent over the last three years.  The longer the team remains in first place, the more the pressure will mount for the team to get better.

But these are all problems for another day.  Right now, I’m just going to enjoy the shockingly good things happening that no on expected – first place is better than second and way better than anyone expected.
