As part of DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh, an annual two-day event that provides unprecedented access to buildings around the city, we are featuring 20 of the many buildings participating.

Today’s building is the Tower at PNC Plaza.

A Brief History of the Tower at PNC Plaza

The Tower at PNC Plaza is a skyscraper in Pittsburgh. It is a relatively new building, with construction beginning in spring 2012 and completed in fall 2015. The tower is known as one of the most green high-rises ever, standing at around 800,000 square feet and 33 stories. It not only meets the LEED Platinum certifications but exceeds them. Sustainability efforts include an operable double-skin facade and an onsite gray water reuse system. Some additional features enable the Tower’s heating and cooling systems to operate in a net-zero-energy state for 30% of the year. There’s also a solar chimney and solar collector.

The tower’s “topping off” ceremony was held four years ago in June 2014 and the tower opened in October 2015.
