5 More Celebrities from Pittsburgh (some you knew and maybe some you didn’t)

Did you know these celebrities were from Pittsburgh? Here are just five of the many illustrious actors, artists, sports stars, musicians and more that have called our lovely “tahn” home.

1. Jeff Goldblum

Actor Jeff Goldblum was born in West Homestead, PA. He moved to New York City at 17 to become an actor and one could say he definitely succeeded. Goldblum was in such hits as The Big Chill, Jurassic Park and Independence Day. Recently, he  turned to music. He played Carnegie Library’s Music Hall in Pittsburgh on Valentine’s Day 2019 in a concert with proceeds partly going to the Tree of Life “Our Victims of Terror” Fund.

2. Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton was born at Ohio Valley Hospital in Kennedy Township. He is the youngest of seven children and attended Montour High School. He has since gone on to star in movies like Birdman, Batman and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Keaton even negotiated a break in his Batman movie contract in case the Pirates made the playoffs. Alas, the post-season never came for the Pirates that year.

3. Joe Namath

The great quarterback and actor was born in Beaver Falls. He was the youngest of four sons with an older adopted sister. His father worked in coal and steel in Pittsburgh when Joe was young. He played with the New York Jets and played in Monday Night Football’s first-ever game on September 21, 1970. His stint in acting included his own show, the short-lived Joe Namath Show as well as popular shows of their time like ALF, The Flip Wilson Show and The Love Boat.

4. Dennis Miller

Talk show host and commentator Dennis Miller was born in Pittsburgh. He grew up in Castle Shannon and was the oldest of five children. He went to St. Anne School in Castle Shannon growing up. He went on to do Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live. He’s also hosted his own show, Dennis Miller Live and then Monday Night Football for awhile. He’s also hosted his own radio show for awhile. He occasionally performs stand-up comedy at the Orleans Hotel in Vegas.

5. Josh Gibson

Baseball player Josh Gibson was born in 1911 in Georgia but his father moved the family to Pittsburgh when Josh was 12. His father found work with the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Company. Gibson trained to become an electrician when he was in the sixth grade. His first time playing organized baseball came at age 16. He was recruited a few years later to play for the Homestead Grays, the Negro League team in Pittsburgh. He later found recognition and fame in the Negro Leagues.
