Historical Background

The history of White Oak traces back to its original settlement as part of Versailles Township, one of Allegheny County’s initial townships. On March 21, 1948, a petition was submitted to the County Court, requesting the Borough’s formation. Judge Russell H. Adams signed the decree of incorporation of the new borough on June 24, 1948. The first borough building was located inside the old Bowery School at 860 Maple Street.

The borough is enveloped by five borders, including North Versailles Township to the north, North Huntingdon Township in Westmoreland County to the east, South Versailles Township to the southwest, Elizabeth Township to the south, and McKeesport to the west. The borough spans a total area of 6.7 square miles, with just 0.04 square miles (0.45%) being water.

The Borough operates under a borough government framework. The borough’s government includes a Mayor, a Council President, a Council Vice President, and Council Members. The borough residents have traditionally shown strong support for the Republican party in presidential elections.

The area offers a robust educational infrastructure, with several reputed schools serving the borough. These include Francis McClure Middle School, Twin Rivers Intermediate School, Founders’ Hall Middle School, and McKeesport Area High School. Additionally, Mary of Nazareth Catholic School provides an option for those seeking Catholic education.

Emergency Services

The borough maintains its own police department, consisting of twelve full-time officers and eight patrol cars. For fire emergencies, the borough relies on two volunteer fire departments: White Oak VFC No. 1 and Rainbow VFC. Emergency Medical Services are provided by White Oak EMS.
