Bullock-Pens Park in Churchill

In 1758, General John Forbes of the British Army marched against Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian Wars and drove a herd of oxen to the region near what is now known as Bullock-pens Park. Subsequently, a number of Forbes’ men stayed in a small village to protect settlers from Indian raids after the fall of Fort Duquesne. During the 19th century, the character of the environment was drastically altered due to logging and coal mining. The Churchill Borough started to purchase parts of the area in 1963 and by 1974, 57 acres had been created as Bullock-Pens Park. Over time, numerous facilities such as picnic shelters, playground equipment, a summer day camp, a bridge across the creek, and other services were added and removed.
