A Brief History of Leetsdale










Leetsdale is a borough in Allegheny County along the Ohio River. Its population as of the 2010 census was 1,218. Leetsdale was incorporated on March 28, 1904. At that time, Leetsdale had been the site of an industrial manufacturing base. Bethlehem Steel was a mill located in Leetsdale that closed in the ’70s. On the site of the mill is now the Leetsdale Industrial Park or Port of Leetsdale, home to a large amount of businesses. Leetsdale is home to Elmridge (aka the James Gardiner Coffin/John Walker House), listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home is located on the corner of Beaver Street and Camp Meeting Road.

Leetsdale is bordered by Ambridge, Edgeworth and Leet. Just across the Ohio River is Crescent Township. As of the last census there were 586 homes in Leetsdale, with just under 24 percent having children under 18. Around 40 percent were married couples living together. In 2018, Leetsdale was designated a Live Well Allegheny Community. The median age of Leetsdale residents is 42 years. Median home prices in the area run at $106,525. The population in Leetsdale is 52 percent women to 47 percent men. Leetsdale is 1.1 square miles.

  1. My Mother’s family lived in Leetsdale for years, she and her siblings all graduated from Leetsdale High. I spent summers with my Grandparents and remember playing in the park, going to Barlows for ice cream, and the great 4th of July fireworks display.
