Origins and History

The origins of the Pittsburgh Glass Center can be traced back to 1991 when David Stephens, then the visual-arts officer of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, approached glass artists Ron Desmett and Kathleen Mulcahy with the idea of establishing a center for studio glass. Originally envisioned as the Elizabeth Glass Center in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, the plans eventually shifted, and the center found its new home in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Glass Center officially opened its doors in 2001, marking the beginning of its journey towards becoming a vibrant hub for glass artistry.

Glass Art: A Lesser-Known Chapter in Pittsburgh’s History

While Pittsburgh is often referred to as “The Steel City” due to its rich history in the steel industry, its contributions to the glass industry are often overlooked. Before the rise of the steel industry, Pittsburgh was actually known as “America’s Glass City.” The first glass factories in the area were established in 1797, and after the Civil War, the glass industry in Pittsburgh reached its peak. Although the steel industry eventually took center stage, the legacy of glass artistry in Pittsburgh remains an important part of the city’s history.
