Lincoln-Larimer

Lincoln Larimer

Lincoln-Larimer is located in the east end of the City of Pittsburgh, close to East Liberty.  The area was named after William Larimer, a wealthy railroad industrialist who built a sprawling home overlooking Pittsburgh’s East End in the 1800s.  The path leading to his home was nicknamed Larimer Lane, later becoming Larimer Avenue.

In the early 1900s, many Italian immigrants had settled in this historic Pittsburgh neighborhood.  As opposed to the Italians who settled in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood, who primarily built row homes, the settlers in Larimer built large, detached brick homes, many of which still remain to this day.

Lincoln-Larimer’s commercial district was dominated by concrete foundries and bakeries, a few of which still exist.  Urban renewal of the 1960s drove many of the original settling families to the suburbs of Pittsburgh, and much of the original community no longer remains. Up until that time, Lincoln-Larimer was considered Pittsburgh’s Little Italy… now bestowed on the neighborhood of Bloomfield.

There are plans in the works to revitalize Lincoln-Larimer… as the east end of Pittsburgh continues it’s renaissance…  it’s an historic and important part of the City of Pittsburgh’s history!
