Sharpsburg is a borough in Allegheny County about 5 miles to the Northeast of the city of Pittsburgh on the Northern side of the Allegheny River.  It has history dating back to the Seneca Native Americans, who settled the area in the 1700s.  The most famous, Guyasuta, was selected by George Washington as a guide in 1753 as Washington was exploring the area.

The area of Sharpsburg was donated to Guyasuta by James O’Hara, who had purchased a large portion of land after a peace treaty between the British Government and Native Americans in the area.  Fast forward from the mid-to-late 1700s to 1826, when James Sharp, travelling through the area, was enchanted by it’s beauty.  He decided to buy 200 acres, build a log cabin for his family, and start a settlement.  He opened his land up to settlers, and it began to grow on the banks of the Allegheny.  In 1841, Sharpsburg became an incorporated borough.

Throughout the years, industrial manufacturing began to grow in Sharpsburg.  It was close to the river, there was a canal that ran through the neighborhood, and the railroads became an important transportation route as well.

Originally, H.J. Heinz Company was founded in Pittsburgh.  The Heinz Glassworks made all of the bottles for Heinz products.  Heinz actually created his first horseradish in the kitchen of his Sharpsburg home, and began bottling it there.  His home then became his first factory.  As Heinz grew, he moved his operations to the North Shore of Pittsburgh.  He never forgot his roots, and is the donor of the statue of Guyasuta at the intersection of Main and North Canal Streets in the borough.

Sharpsburg is a vibrant community today on the Allegheny River boasting a reviving business district, community parks and a pleasant city-like atmosphere.  The city of Pittsburgh is a quick jump down Route 28!
