It’s always weird walking into a place you used to work. Like someone bought your house. Luckily when I got to the Squirrel Hill Sports Bar (where I worked when it was Frankies/Frankie and Georgies), they have taken great care of my former “home.”
They have also continued and expanded on the open stage. You can find amazing talent there every Sunday at 10:00. The house band alone is worth the price of admission. Anchored by young but seasoned players keyboardist Max Somerville of Wreck Loose, guitarist Shane McLaughlin of Buffalo Rose, Aiden Epstein, the bassist for Manic Soul, and Kevin Lynch who plays with drums with Ferdinand the Bull. …… they rock
Even more impressive is that they back up anyone who signs up to play, it could be an up and coming singer songwriter, a rapper, someone who’s been doing this for 30 years, a metal singer whatever. I have even seen spoken word poetry.
It’s kind of surreal to see all this talent performing while people play pool or darts, watch sports, smoke cigars or even dance among the tables. If you’re looking to jam or watch the great talent that shows up – this is your scene.
If you’re a music lover, head to Squirrel Hill on Sundays for some great local music at the Squirrel Hill Sports Bar. It’s located at 5832 Foward Avenue.
