Oakland is a vibrant and exciting neighborhood in the city. There are countless things to do in the area. Here are just five of the many options for spending a day (or a few more!) in the neighborhood.
1. Visit Phipps Conservatory
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a green oasis in the middle of Oakland. A city of Pittsburgh historic landmark, the site has seasonal flower shows, an on-site café and gift shop and an outdoor area that is magical especially around the holidays. More information on Phipps can be found here.
2. Check out the Carnegie Museum of Natural History
The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is one of the top natural history museums in the U.S. Exhibits change periodically and they are very kid-friendly. Museum members get in free. More information on the Carnegie Museum of Natural History can be found here.
3. Check out Dollar Bank’s Cinema in the Park at Flagstaff Hill every summer
Flagstaff Hill in Schenley Park hosts an annual summer outdoor movie festival. This year, the festival runs from June 5th through August 28th, 2019. A film schedule will be announced soon. Inclement weather can cause cancellations, so it’s advised to check beforehand if the movie is still showing. More information on the Cinema in the Park can be found here.
4. Take out of town visitors to the Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral of Learning
If you haven’t been to the Nationality Rooms at the Cathedral of Learning yet, definitely go. If you have, they’re a great place to take out of towners. The classroom-style rooms each show a particular country and the good things its immigrants brought to the U.S. More information on the Nationality Rooms can be found here.
5. Eat at the O
The Original Hot Dog Shop, Inc., or what most Pittsburghers affectionately call “The O,” is an old-school restaurant along Forbes Ave. Open weekends until 2 a.m., it’s the perfect greasy spoon for local college kids or those just looking for a good hot dog, fries and beer for a Saturday night late-night snack. More information on the O can be found here.
When you’re done exploring (and if you haven’t already satisfied your appetite with “O Fries”… try one of these great restaurants in Oakland.
