Jeannette, Pennsylvania, a city steeped in history and culture, has a storied past that dates back centuries. From its humble beginnings in the midst of a major war to its rise as a key player in America’s industrial revolution, Jeannette has stood the test of time. This city, once known as “The Glass City”, has a vibrant past full of remarkable figures, pivotal events, and enduring legacies.

Jeanette is Founded

In 1763, the area which would eventually become Jeannette, found itself in the midst of a significant conflict – Pontiac’s War. The Battle of Bushy Run, a skirmish between British forces and Native American tribes, was a turning point in the conflict. The British forces triumphed, preventing the Native Americans from capturing Fort Pitt and paving the way for western expansion.

The Birth of a Borough and The Rise of Industry

Fast forward to the late 19th century, and the area had transformed significantly. In 1888, several farms were purchased to make way for the Chambers and McKee Glass Works. The following year, Jeannette was officially recognized as a borough. The city was named after the wife of one of the founders, H. Sellers McKee.

The establishment of the glass factory led to Jeannette’s initial moniker as “The Glass City”. The city’s abundant supply of coal and natural gas, proximity to Pittsburgh, and easy access to numerous railroads made it an industrial hub. At its peak, Jeannette was home to seven major glass factories, the world’s largest tableware glass factory, and a rubber plant.

The Naming of Clay Avenue

J.A. Chambers and H. Sellers McKee, the founders of the Chambers and McKee Glass Works, named Jeannette’s main street “Clay Avenue” after Richard W. Clay, a key financial backer.

Jeannette’s Sporting Legacy

Jeannette has a rich sporting history, particularly in football. The Jeannette Athletic Club played in the first professional football game against the Latrobe Athletic Association in August 1895.

The Emergence of the Elliot Company

In 1914, the Elliot Company, a business specializing in the production, installation, and maintenance of large turbine engines, moved to Jeannette. To this day, the company remains a significant contributor to the city’s economy.

From Borough to City

On January 1, 1938, the borough was officially recognized as a city, with Attorney John M. O’Connell serving as its first mayor.

Jeannette in the 1960s

By the 1960s, Jeannette was home to around 16,000 residents. The city boasted numerous department stores, movie theaters, nightclubs, and other tourist attractions.

Notable Figures

Throughout its history, Jeannette has been home to several notable figures. These include Steve August, an NFL offensive tackle for the Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers, and Karen D. Beyer, a former State Representative for the 131st district in the Lehigh Valley. Terrelle Pryor, a former high school quarterback for the Jeannette Jayhawks and NFL quarterback and wide receiver, also hails from the city.

Today, Jeannette continues to be a thriving city, rich in history and culture. It remains a testament to the industrious spirit of its founders and the resilience of its residents.
