Historical Background
Establishment and Early Settlements
In the mid-1700s, Glenshaw was a popular trading hub where Europeans and Native Americans from the Ohio Valley exchanged goods, predominantly in the valleys of Big Pine Creek and Girty’s Run. After acquiring several hundred acres of land, pioneer John Shaw, Sr., laid the foundation for what would become the village of Glenshaw by establishing a log sawmill. Originally known as “Shaw’s Glen”, the area underwent numerous transformations before it became known as Glenshaw.
Township Formation
Shaler Township, which encompasses Glenshaw, was officially formed in March 1847. It initially included present-day Shaler, Millvale, Etna, and parts of Ross Township. Despite initial considerations to name it Marion Township, it was ultimately named after Judge Charles Shaler, a prominent mid-19th-century judge in the Pittsburgh area.
Demographic Transition and Development
Over the years, Shaler Township underwent numerous changes. It was initially a second-class township until it was incorporated as a first-class township in 1900 following a petition for a status upgrade. The township originally had four wards, which further subdivided with time. In 1951, the commissioners decided to hire a township manager, with J. Wynn Thompson serving as the first.
