Bethel Park is a great neighborhood for families. There are plenty of activities in Bethel Park for all seasons, whether it’s swimming at the wave pool in the summer or holiday-themed fun.
Summer Fun at the South Park Wave Pool
The South Park Wave Pool is a great place to cool off during those stiflingly hot Pittsburgh summer afternoons. The pool usually opens in early June and closes after Labor Day. There is an admission fee for the wave pool ($6 for adults, $3 for seniors, $5 for youth and $1 for children). For your youngest ones, there are swimming classes and there’s even a swim team for water lovers. The pool accepts groups with a minimum of 20 for a 24-hour notice.
The Annual Tree Lighting at the Community Center
The Bethel Park community comes together every year to light a holiday tree. There are fun musical performances and lots of catching up with neighbors. The lighting always brings out hundreds and Santa always makes an appearance. The ceremony was moved indoors about seven years ago and now the community lights a 12-foot artificial tree that is just as grand as a real one!
Ice Skating at the South Park Ice Rink
Spending the winter at the South Park ice rink is a great way for families with kids to burn off some steam. The rink is open various hours, so check the web site before you go. The South Park ice rink offers free skating lessons for those interested. The rink is closed every Monday and on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Go Hiking in the Spring or Fall on the Montour Trail
The section of the Montour Trail at Bethel Park begins at Irishtown Road. Those who’ve used the trail have called it a “hidden gem.” The trail is well-maintained and is perfect for hikers or bikers looking for a little respite from the city. It’s peaceful and a fun historical fact—it used to be a railbed. Nothing like some healthy, free fun!
Visit South Hills Village Mall
You can’t go wrong with this mall, a Simon Mall, located in Bethel Park. Get some back-to-school or holiday shopping done and then take the kids to the Carmike Cinemas, located at the mall. Stop at Color Me Mine and make some pottery or grab a twist cone at Dairy Queen. No matter what the season, there’s always fun to be had at South Hills Village.
