The Bridge’s Profile
The Homestead Grays Bridge, situated in the Allegheny County, connects Homestead Borough with the southernmost tip of Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood. This gargantuan bridge spans across the Monongahela River, boasting a total length of nearly 3,750 ft and a height of 49.9 ft. The bridge was established in 1936 and continues to serve as a vital connection between the two areas.
Architectural Distinction
The Homestead Grays Bridge is not just known for its size but also for its unique structural design known as the Wichert Truss. This design, developed and patented by E. M. Wichert of Pittsburgh in 1930, uses a quadrilateral shape over each support, making the truss statically determinate. This feature allows for easier calculation of forces in the structural members. Today, very few surviving Wichert Truss bridges exist, making the Grays Bridge a rare architectural gem.
Historical Significance
The bridge’s historical importance goes beyond its architectural uniqueness. It was built to replace the 1897’s Brown’s Bridge (Homestead and Highland Bridge), which was upstream and linked Brown’s Hill Rd on the north bank and Second Avenue between Ann Street and Amity Street, Homestead on the south bank.
Tribute to Homestead Grays
On July 11, 2002, the Homestead High-Level Bridge was renamed the Homestead Grays Bridge in honor of the Homestead Grays baseball team. The Homestead Grays originated as a group of steelworkers in 1912 and eventually became a dominant team in the Negro Leagues during the first half of the 20th century.
Rehabilitation and Preservation
Over the years, the bridge had grown dilapidated since its last renovation in 1979. In 2006 and 2007, extensive work was undertaken to rehabilitate the bridge. The old deck was removed, and the structure stripped down to the steel. The steel structure was then repaired, and a new, wider deck was installed. The new deck increased the traffic lanes’ width by six feet and provided broader pedestrian walkways. The railings and lighting were replaced with reproductions of historic models, and the entire structure received a new coat of blue-grey paint.
In 2019, Allegheny County undertook a bridge preservation project. This project included minor steel repairs, downspout and scupper repairs and cleanout, and barrier and deck repairs, ensuring that this unique steel bridge remains in service well beyond its 100-year anniversary.
